#Python – Can’t install TensorFlow on Anaconda, maybe is the Visual Studio distribution

Hi!

This is the 2nd time I get a weird error when I install TensorFlow in my Anaconda distribution. And this is the 2nd time I realize that I’m using the Anaconda version that is preinstalled with Visual Studio. I’m not sure if the spaces in the path affects the creation of environments or it’s something else, however my current and big and amazing solution is:

  • Uninstall Anaconda
  • Install Anaconda again

And then, follow the simple commands in the official Anaconda and TensorFlow doc (see references)

conda create -n tensorflow_env tensorflow
conda activate tensorflow_env

Once tensorflow is installed, I usually test this in python

> Python
import tensorflow as tf
print(tf.__version__)

Note: please ignore the typos!

anaconda start python and test anaconda version

Now TensorFlow is installed and it’s time to move forward with a new development environment.

Happy Coding!

#VS2017 – How to select the components to install in each WorkLoad (ie: avoid #Unity3D)

Hello!

I’ve already written a couple of posts on the new installation experience in Visual Studio 2017 (link). I really like to have the chance to select workloads instead of selecting component one by one.

Note: In the latest Visual Studio 2017 RC version some of these workloads have disappeared since “have not passed the quality bar” for the final product. They will be published as packages apart to integrate with Visual Studio 2017.

An important detail when we use this method of installation is to make sure we only install what we need. For example, I am working with a Beta version of Unity3D and the default VS2017 installs an earlier version of Unity3D. At the end, I’ll have 2 versions of Unity3D, and this is something that I don’t need.

As well, let’s see how to do this in 2 simple steps.

  • We started with the Visual Studio 2017 Installation window.

clipboard01

  • When we select the Workload of “Game Development with Unity”, we can see how on the “Summary” section we can find the components that are installed.

clipboard02

  • If we uncheck Unity, we will see that we have… save 4 GB on disk space!

clipboard03

  • Another way to to this is to review the list of “Individual Components”.  We can find “Unity Editor ” in the “Games and Graphics” section.

clipboard04

  • And that’s it! We can begin installing our “custom” version of Visual Studio 2017 😀

#VS2017 – Before update Visual Studio 2017 RC, you need to update the installer!

Hello!

I have just come back to Toronto and is time to store my Surface Pro for a few days and return to work with my development device (the good one).

Note: The Surface Pro 4 is a good device for travel, demos and presentations. However, it is a bit short if you work with more complex projects as for instance with Xamarin or Hololens projects.

After 2 weeks, obviously, Windows 10 took a while to update to the latest version of Windows Insider. Although what most caught my attention is that the new Visual Studio 2017 was also updated in a way that I didn’t expect. I’ll go through the steps of updating to highlight the important one.

  • VS2017 RC update notification. This is perfectly normal.

clipboard01

  • The way to update Visual Studio 2017 is using the product installer. So a search for “installer” and launch the Visual Studio Installer.

clipboard03

  • The installer shows us that we have an update on VS2017Rc Enterprise

clipboard04

  • It starts the download of the new version of VS2017…

clipboard02

  • In you face common developer! Before continuing, we have to update the installer

clipboard06

  • Very politely, the installer asks us a minute while it updates. (maybe this is because I’m already in Canada)

clipboard07

  • And we can already see the “new installer”… and move on.

clipboard08

At this time, we can now update VS2017RC with the new installer. If we see the detail of the steps above we can see that the installer is upgraded from version (1.2.21110.1) to the new version (1.2.21220.1)

Reviewing the news of each build in Visual Studio 2017 Release Notes, you can see that also publishes updates to the installer. Basically, it has adapted to some Windows 10 changes to install new components, the latest version of Unity and other news.

#VS2017 – Como actualizar Visual Studio 2017 actualizando el instalador!

Hola !

Saludos @ Toronto

#VS2017 – There are some GREAT improvements in the installation process! (Do you know anything about this?)

Update: The product name is officially Visual Studio 2017 instead of Visual Studio 15.

Hello!

A few hours ago the 5 Preview of Visual Studio 15 was announced. And while many posts speak about the new C# 7, or what’s new in web development; not many of them shares the great improvements included in the installation process.

A few days ago I had to reinstall my computer from scratch and as always at the time of Visual Studio 2015 to reach, I had to prepare a few 100GBs in the SSD only to install the tools and then clone a repository.

I understand that to the time of install Xamarin and tools of development multi-platform, there are elements that take a lot of disk space, for example, the virtual machines. However, the classic Visual Studio Installer had reached a point where needed a renovation; and in Visual Studio 15, we have a new flavour here.

The first thing we see when we launched the installer is a sight with all the different branches of development that we can continue: for example, UWP or Classic Desktop Apps.

There are other options like web development or very deep and extreme options like Visual Studio  Extensibility or Linux development with C++ (Yes that’s correct)

clipboard09

If you also want to have installed some specific .NET Framework versions or even additional languages such as F #, the section [Individual Components] presents these options.

capture_005_05102016_234541

Here we can find also additional tools such as Git, GitHub for Visual Studio extension or emulators for Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Edition and the Visual Studio Android Emulator.

capture_006_05102016_234550

Finally the section [Language Packs] allows us to… well, this is an easy one!

capture_007_05102016_234558

And just as a final curiosity, ALL the options selected to give us a total of ~40GB required.
