#Camtasia – Remind to add [Noise Removal] effect to your audio tracks! #TechSmith

Hi!

I’ll leave this tip / reminder here, because it seems weird for that I forgot this after all this time.

So, I was finishing the edit process in some Machine Learning videos with Camtasia, and @JuanKRuiz told me to improve the audio quality. And of course, it’s as simple as add the [Noise Removal] effect in Camtasia (see references).

There are 2 ways to use this effect

  • You can just add the effect to one of your tracks. This is the default option, and it works great smoothing the background noises in the audio track.
  • You can add the effect and then analyze the audio. This option will use more resources, because it will analyze the audio track to detect pikes and anomalies and will remove those noises. Be aware, that this option will use some CPU / RAM and it may take some time.

Back in my NTN podcast days, I used to use this effect a lot! It was amazing how it removes some noise like keyboard typing, cars noise and children playing in the swimming pool!

So, you know, if you are editing a video or audio track and you want to improve the audio quality, Noise Removal is a must do.

Happy coding!

#Podcast – Lessons learned after a year recording podcasts

clipboard02

Hello!

When I decided to move to Canada, I thought that I would live all day locked up inside my house shoveling snow and running away from bears. Because of this, I added to my list of my community activities: “record a podcast“. I never tried this so and seemed like a great time to learn about this sharing format.

At the end, I found a much friendlier climate and also a great country with amazing very warming people. Everyone helped me to move ahead with my idea of the podcast. Today, nine months after the publication of the 1st episode, I think it is a great time to share some lessons learned along the way.

Hardware

  • After recording a couple of episodes using a “classic Skype Conferences” headset, I decided to invest in a higher quality microphone. I was lucky to find a deal at Amazon with the Blue Yeti Microphone (Link). As a USB microphone, it is an excellent choice.
  • The ideal complement to this microphone are Bose Noise Cancellation headphones. I have the previous model at this (link) and the truth is that it is one of the best purchase that I have made (Thanks Ramon!).

clipboard01

Recording and Editing

  • The is an important topic. I started using Camtasia for this, and I think I have improved enough until a decent podcast quality. I also wrote a small Tutorial on How to record and edit podcasts with Camtasia (link)
  • During the first episodes, I used to take notes directly in OneNote. This means that while we were having a conversation, I started to type like a boring monkey. The problem with this, is that the sound of the keyboard was also included in the podcast with high background noise.
  • After testing some edition filters and several different keyboards, I decided to go back to an abandoned item: pen and paper. After this, the “background noises” in the podcast, have been almost reduced to zero.
  • Also, after recording it, each podcast requires some editing time. In the next image you can see “rests” which I add a podcast to eliminate background noise.

clipboard03

  • I have not measured in detail, however the formula for time spent editing for podcast is required recording time (RT) and 1.5 edition time (ET). As a sample
    • A 30-minute recording will require 45 minutes of editing
    • A 60-minute recording will require 90-minute Edition
  • After listening “La Órbita de Endor” some time in iVoox (link), I liked the platform. I know that there are many more, but iVoox think that it meets and exceeds the target of my podcast.

Podcasts Contents

Podcast and Guests speakers

  • I maybe also forget some place here. Until today I have spoken with people in
    • Spain
    • Andorra
    • England
    • Bolivia
    • Colombia
    • Mexico
    • Argentina
  • And in the coming days I will add
    • Uruguay, recorded podcast and publish it soon!
    • Peru, pending work for the coming week!

  • Seleccionar [Record system audio].

  • Mezclar a mono

image

#Tutorial – Record a #Skype conversation with #Camtasia and produce an Audio output

Hi !

Now that my Windows 10 is working fine with Camtasia (not like this), I think is time to share the way I use Camtasia to record my Skype conversations.

I use a Jabra headset for my personal and work phone calls, so by default this is the device I use for audio in and out in my conversations.

However, in order to use Camtasia to record the conversation we need to change the default audio settings.

image

And set this values in the Audio Settings

  • Microphone, the one you want. In example: my Jabra headset
  • Speakers: Select the default audio output in your machine. This seems to be weird, but you’ll get the point in the next step.

image

Now you can start Camtasia Recorder

image

Go to Tools // Options and set this values in the Inputs section

  • Audio device: The same Microphone device you defined in Skype
  • Check [Record system audio]. This will record the output of the audio in a different track, and this output will be the voice of the other participants in the Skype call

image

You can also make this quick selection directly from the Camtasia Recorder interface. Remember CHECK THE [Record System Audio] OPTION

image

So now you can start the recording and have some fun!

Once you finish your recording, you’ll be prompted to save this recording. And also to edit the recording using Camtasia Studio. Once you drag the recorded file to the track section you will see both recording

  • One track for your voice
  • One track for the Skype participants voices

image

Camtasia studio audio options are very basic, however they are good enough to make some good audio improvements. If you right click on one of the tracks you can select the [Edit audio] option and

  • Enable volume leveling
  • Enable noise removal
  • Mix to mono

image

You can also [Add audio point] in one track to manage the volume in the track. In example: You can add a background music in a new track, and volume down the music using audio points, once the tracks for the Skype conversation are added into the mix.

image

Finally, once you are happy with your project, you can create an audio file. To do this, you must select the option [File // Produce Special // Export audio as …] and select the location for your MP3 file.

image

And that’s it! Now you can record your Skype conversations using Camtasia.

En Settings / Update and Security, seleccionamos Recovery and y luego la opción [Go back to an earlier build]

Clipboard06

Aprovechamos para reportar el error a Microsoft.

Clipboard07

#Windows10 – #Camtasia Studio error on Windows 10 and how to solve the error using the Force ;)

1X_AMZ_PORTAL_SW_V02_FALCON_CA_English._CB274431132_

Hi !

Today is May 4th, so May the force be with you ! And I could use some force during the past days when Windows 10 and Camtasia Studio started a weird fight and my podcast edition process was completely broken.

Every time I tried to start Camtasia Studio, I get this error.

Clipboard03

The event viewer was not very useful also, I found this entry every time I try to start the app

Faulting application name: CamtasiaStudio.exe, version: 8.6.0.2054, time stamp: 0x55d3d620
Faulting module name: mfksproxy.dll, version: 10.0.14328.1000, time stamp: 0x5715888a

Report Id: 40f717df-1909-4db6-be5d-6f7eb430db36
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

So, the main issue was related to “mfksproxy.dll”. There seems to be some updates in my current Windows 10 version, which are not good enough to work with Camtasia. So after a couple of internet search, I found a new version of Camtasia which should fix this error. Sadly for me, it doesn’t work either.

So, next step is take some advantage of the new deploy features of Windows 10:

Let’s rollback only a version in the Windows Insider Ring.

And that’s easy, go to Settings / Update and Security, select Recovery and the option [Go back to an earlier build]

Clipboard06

This is a good moment to also report the issue to Microsoft.

Clipboard07

Wait a couple of minutes, and you’ll get a stable environment to run Camtasia Studio !
