[# KINECT] Kinect for Windows available on 1 February (and change of picture in development)

Hi,

yesterday at CES, our friend Steve Ballmer announced the availability of a new sensor Kinect especially designed for Windows. It is a bit more expensive than the current one, U$ S 249 but has an evolution in their firmware that allows you to identify objects in a very close distance and also special support for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Some asked why the price difference is almost 150 dolarasos more expensive than the Xbox version and the answer is as follows:

The ability to sell Kinect for Xbox 360 at its current price point is in large part subsidized by consumers buying a number of Kinect games, subscribing to Xbox LIVE, and making other transactions associated with the Xbox 360 ecosystem. In addition, the Kinect for Xbox 360 was built for and tested with the Xbox 360 console only, which is why it is not licensed for general commercial use, or under warranty when used on any other platform supported.

It seems that the development of applications with the Xbox Kinect sensor will not be supported for commercial applications that are developed for Windows. I.e. 2 devices to a common goal. Played strange and surely implications in a short time by Microsoft.

The other big change is given by the cost of the SDK. Until this time was speculated with a SDK free and another payment for developing applications for Windows, but that put you the hack with the price of the hardware, because they give you the SDK and runtime for the Kinect for Windows. Now well, and finally > > as there are many projects underway using the SDK in Beta and the sensor for XBox, because for them the license extends to 2016; But if you want to develop applications for Windows, better that you go putting the U$ S249 (or €249 here in Spain) to buy the sensor for Windows.

Buenas,

The ability to sell Kinect for Xbox 360 at its current price point is in large part subsidized by consumers buying a number of Kinect games, subscribing to Xbox LIVE, and making other transactions associated with the Xbox 360 ecosystem. In addition, the Kinect for Xbox 360 was built for and tested with the Xbox 360 console only, which is why it is not licensed for general commercial use, supported or under warranty when used on any other platform.

Saludos @ Home
